Why People Think Aliens Might Exist, According to Experts

editor1, August 4, 2024

Belief in aliens has been a recurring theme throughout history. According to a 2019 Gallup poll, about one-third of Americans think that UFO sightings might be evidence of extraterrestrial spacecraft. However, 60 percent believe these unusual sightings can be explained by human activity or natural phenomena, and 7 percent are unsure. Another Gallup poll indicated that 68 percent of people think the government knows more about UFOs than it discloses, a sentiment that may be influenced by recent UFO-related hearings.

Christopher C. French, head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at the University of London, points out a crucial distinction: “It’s important to differentiate between the questions, ‘Do you believe aliens exist?’ and ‘Do you believe aliens have ever visited Earth?'” Many scientists might affirm the possibility of extraterrestrial life but remain skeptical about claims of alien visits due to insufficient evidence.

So, what drives belief in aliens? Experts identify several factors:

Social Influence: Clinical psychologist John Mayer notes that individuals who believe in aliens often have social circles with similar views, which reinforces their beliefs. French concurs, emphasizing that one’s environment, including family and friends, can significantly shape beliefs about alien visitation.

Media Impact: The portrayal of aliens in the media can influence public perception. French explains that constant media coverage of unexplained phenomena can lead people to consider more extraordinary explanations. Reports from reputable sources, like The New York Times, can also contribute to the belief in aliens by presenting these topics as credible.

Government Reports: French acknowledges that government interest in UFOs can fuel belief in aliens. Many people interpret official investigations into UFOs as validation of extraterrestrial existence. However, French notes that those who are firmly convinced of alien visitation may dismiss government findings unless they confirm their beliefs. He points out that the majority of UFO sightings can be explained by mundane factors, though some enthusiasts focus on the few cases that remain unexplained.

Desire for Something Greater: Mayer suggests that some people may turn to beliefs in aliens as a way to fill a void or seek meaning beyond everyday life. This need for a higher power or greater existence can drive belief in extraterrestrial life.

French adds that the quest to understand whether we are alone in the universe is a natural and understandable human curiosity. As Arthur C. Clarke famously said, “Two possibilities exist: Either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”
